Komiža - Podhumlje - Hum - Komiža

Good morning!

On a beautiful sunny day, coax us out on a gathering of MS „Hum“ society.A crew of reliable, entusiastic people started a new circulation on our cliff.

The start is in Komiža at the base of St.Nikola church. A new challenge is in front of us. The path which brought us from the church we turns left uphill through „Ravno“.

This path was used by our ancestors in the attempt to become masters of this rock pile. As always I was enthusiastic about this historic path, path of our grandfathers. With every step of the way, every stone ingrained in this path was cut in my soul, like it was cut in the horny hands of ancient times. I appreciated every sweat drop, which they spilled to made a little piece of fertile land, to fed many hungry mouths. I remember a tale about little Ivan and his first sacrament. This story I very often tell to my kids. This tale was told by Ivan himself, and noted by prof. Božanic. Click here to find out what happened to little Ivan!

And this forest…it knew my grandfather for sure, and my old grandmother. I will stop for a moment and listen to this pine, maybe it will tell me some talk…stop and listen what Nature has to say to you. You will be surprised.

I look at over my shoulder to look once more at Komiža before we go to the other side of the hill. The path is not hard and we follow it easily.

Soon we are on the top, on „Ravno“. The name „Ravno“ is funny, but on this small island it is rare to see such flat surface. We are on the top, but it is not our aim, and this day, this heaven,. It is a picture that I must have. Beautiful. Adjective which is used too many times, but with reason.

This part of thepath, made by ex-Yugoslav army, is taking us to a little chapel. It is ironic (Yugo army – chapel). I think it was made after the war for the fatherland. I doubt that the mastery of that time allowed that little relic of God on their road.

We are going out on the asphalt road right behind the marker of settlement „Podhumlje“. One small part of the path takes us through the settlement. It is a vivid little place with houses whose front grounds are decorated with vineyards.

I was impresed by the old house which has the lavander field in its foreground, like in some picture book…look for yourself.

Soon we are turning left next to the mountain marker towards „Hum“. Short walking through the grass brings us to a steep climb and the road which takes us to Tito's cave.

A rather high slope and climb and then we are progressing like snails. Breathing practice helps us to overcome this effort. A tower or some type of guard house is here as witness of some past events. We can admire the building which once protected lives.

This climb ends in front of steps and a new climb to the cave. Some worthy hands made these steps at Tito's command. I am trying to count them but I don't succeed. I am breathless and my bag is making everything harder.

The cave and commemorattion to the past are taking us to new marker and to the goal. We have walked for 3 hours. One more short climb and that is it. In some parts of the path I am feeling like I am in a Slavonian forest, and I am adoring the nature.

I can hear someone forward who is shouthing: „we have arrived!“ Yes, here it is, Holy Spirit church, and our well-earned break. We are hungry and thirsty. We have our lunch with a beautiful view of Komiža. Wonderful!

The way back is taking us on the Komiža side of Hum. Our view is constantly directed below. You are feeling that you can sink in the sea and sky-blue. We are walking fast, dislodging stones under our feet. Unique sound, I will return one day to record that sound, because I can not do that now. Rest and full bellies have done their work; we are in a good mood.

We are at the foot of the hill after a hour. After that climb to Tito's cave my knees are shaking, but I don't give up.

On the end of the path we run into sheep, they are having lunch. On the end of the path one willful creature stood crosswisewe. Guess who – donkey! He didn't want to move so we had to go around him.

We tried to encorage him to move, caress him a little but he didn't move from the path. However, with laughing humor we got around him. He sent us off with: „iaaaaa!“

The route Komiža - Podhumlje – Hum – Komiža last about 5 – 6 hours.
