Vis - Hum - Komiža - Vis

It is really an inspring route. It will please those who want to make an effort. You will be fascinated with the beauty and richness of the views, so take note of it.

Bicyclists and bikers can use their „pets“ on the major part of this road. Footmen, use mountaineering markers for hiking on Hum, the highest top on island Vis. These markers have been set along the path to Hum and they are quite visible.

The destination is not the top of the hill, because there is a well protected military radar station surrounded with wire at the peak. Therefore, the destination has been established close to the top, at the Holy Spirits's church. You will find a signet as a proof of the visit. The signet is metallic and it has been set in concrete next to the church's door.

There is considerable traffic there, but don't be afraid, it is a favorite place of our paragliders. Komiža is deep below this site. The view is fantastic. It's really hard to find the right words to describe the beauty and blueness, while in the background the magic island of Biševo simply allures you. Come and take a photo for your memories.

If you start from Vis, go along, as we call it, the „old road“. It was built in the time of Austrian-Hungarian empire. The first four kilometers are physicalyy the most demanding because you have to climb the serpentine road to the Cross. There is a wondrous view of Viško and Plisko fields. You can walk down quickly and easily. In this field there was an Allied-established airport during the Second World War.

If you look carefully, you will see many columns from that time, painted in red and white segments and marking the airport runway. Nowadays there are big vineyards in which you always come across a few worthy grape-growers working on their vines.

Moreover, the next few kilometars you will see more vineyards. Inhabitants of Vis are very proud of their vineyards, especially the variety known as Vugava from which wine of superior quality is made. If you come to the island Vis, you shouldn't go away without tasting white wine Vugava or red wine Biševacki plavac from island Biševo.

This part of the road is quite restful and there isn't much traffic, because most people use the new road to Komiža on the other side of the island. There is a turn to the road to Hum in the village of Podšpilje, but when you are arrive there, you should first visit Duboka bay. It is a beautiful S-shaped bay. It is something unforgetable and ideal for those who desire peaceful settings.

Continue further on the road to Hum by bicycle till the village of Žena Glava. Here road becomes steep, perhaps too steep, so we recommend that you continue onfoot.

You wonder about the picture of this old woman here? Why does it seem interesting? I was intrigued by way she washed the dishes. Beneath the sun, in front of a deep well, dishes in a little container, she was scrubing her them with a root. But no common root -- once upon a time there wasn't washing powder and people had to use what they could. It was strange watching how the root is foaming and how the grease vanished. It is stranger that life went on without lipids in those days, and that today lipids pollute our planet.
Looking at this old lady reminds me of a funny story which happened very close to this place. One old man's life was in jeopardy, and you can discover what his cousin did if you click here!

If you are following the markers, after 10 minutes of walking you will be in front of Tito's cave. From Tito's cave to the top of the Hum you walk about 30 minutes further. Return by same path till Podšpilje and then on the „old road“ continue about 8 kilometers to Komiža.

If you are young or strong or very persistent and maybe all of that, accept a challenge and come back to Vis by the new road. You will not be disapointed on this leg of the journey. Starting with 5 kilometers of steep slope out of Komiza with switchbacks to St.Mihovil's chunch is the hardest part of the path. After that, it's al downhill to Vis, like we say "bonaca".

Those who have accept the challenge and walk on foot using hiking paths will pass so much beautiful legs of a journey, admiring the fact that where man has gone and put a mark of his hard work, sweat and dedication in an effort to survive. You will admire the effort, as I have admired each time when I arrive there.

Path Vis-Hum-Komiža last about 5-6 hours.
